OKAVANGO DELTA
The Okavango Delta
(or Okavango Swamp) in Botswana, is a large inland delta, formed
where the Okavango River reaches a
tectonic trough in
the central part of the endorheic basin of the Kalahari. All the
water reaching the Delta is
ultimately evaporated
and transpired, and does not flow into any sea or ocean. Each year
approximately 11 cubic
kilometres of water
spreads over the 6,000-15,000 km² area. Some flood-waters drain
into Lake Ngami. The Moremi Game Reserve, a National Park, is on the
eastern side of the Delta. This statistical significance
helped the Okavango Delta secure a position as one of the
Seven Natural Wonders of Africa, which were officially declared
on February 11, 2013 in Arusha, Tanzania. The area was once
part of Lake Makgadikgadi, an ancient lake that mostly
dried up by the early Holocene. Although the Okavango Delta is
widely believed to be the world's largest inland delta, it
is, in fact not. In Africa alone there are two larger similar
geological features - the Sudd on the Nile in South Sudan, and the
Inner Niger Delta in Mali.

CAMP OKAVANGO
Most people involuntarily draw a breath when they walk from the airstrip into this sprawling campsite. Its location on remote Nxaragha (Na-ka-ra) Island in the heart of the permanent delta makes it accessible only by plane or water. Built by an eccentric American millionaire many years ago (she used to jet off to Los Angeles to get her hair done), this water camp combines style, comfort, and a year-round water wilderness experience. Huge trees arch over an outdoor lounge with sweeping lawns leading down to the water, where hippos snort all night. Your tent, with private bathroom, is built on a raised wooden platform that overlooks the delta. It's set among groves of ancient trees and is so well separated that you might believe you're the only one in camp. Common areas with worn flagstones have comfortable colonial-style furniture, and elegant dinners are served in the high-thatch dining area, where an original sycamore fig mokoro is suspended over the long wooden dining table. A camp highlight: chilled drinks from a bar set up in the middle of a lagoon tended by a wading barman. Enquire....
